Python 3.15 changes core defaults as developer platforms expand

Python 3.15 arrived with new built-in types and UTF-8 as the default encoding, while Terraform’s Google Cloud provider also introduced upgrade-sensitive changes. Elsewhere, shorter certificate lifetimes and new platform pricing set concrete dates for operational changes.

Key developments

Python 3.15 arrives

Python 3.15 adds sentinel and frozendict built-in types, makes UTF-8 the default encoding and introduces package start-up configuration files. The release also improves the experimental JIT compiler.

Applications that depend on previous encoding defaults face compatibility changes when moving to Python 3.15.

Certificate lifetimes shrink

Let's Encrypt will begin issuing and renewing certificates with 64-day validity on February 10, 2027. It expects the last 90-day certificate to expire on May 11, 2027, and will not revoke valid certificates.

Sites using Let's Encrypt will have less time between renewals, making failures in renewal automation more urgent.

Scanner findings outpace fixes

Anthropic’s OSS Scanner identified 29,000 possible bugs in open-source software, with 516 fixed. The scanner launched last week as part of its Cyber Mission.

Open-source maintainers face a backlog of findings that still require assessment as possible bugs rather than confirmed vulnerabilities.

Copilot runtime moves to Rust

GitHub migrated more than 800,000 lines of Copilot runtime code from TypeScript and Node.js to Rust in about 14.5 weeks using AI-assisted development. The incremental rewrite used N-API interoperability, automated testing, human review and 128 pull requests while releases continued.

Interoperability allowed the runtime replacement to proceed without stopping releases.

Cloudflare expands request tracing

Cloudflare Traces entered open beta with OpenTelemetry spans covering security rules, transformations, cache, routing and origin handling. It supports W3C traceparent headers and targeted sampling through Trace Rules, with pricing shifting to ingestion and retention volume from December 1.

Developers can inspect request handling beyond Workers, while tracing costs will depend on the amount of data ingested and retained.

EventBridge adds delivery controls

AWS enhanced Amazon EventBridge custom buses with centralized cross-account sharing, ordered delivery, simplified subscriber management, event replay and content-based deduplication. The update introduces publisher/subscriber-based pricing.

Event-driven applications gain ordering and replay options alongside a different basis for service costs.
